Keeping the
Tradition Alive.....
The Youth of Today

Please read the
following story from 12 year old Cheyenne:
I love the outdoors very
much and have always understood hunting. I’ve had a lot of amazing memories
and experiences so I decided to pick the one that stood out the most and one
that I will never ever forget.
About three years ago when I was nine years old I went hunting with my parents
on the opening day of deer season. I was so excited that I didn’t get much
sleep the night before the hunt. By the time I got up I felt like I had never
slept, but I was way too exited to care. I remember getting ready and eating
breakfast very quickly. When we got outside it was very cold and so dark that I
could barely see in front of me but my dad had a flash light so we could see. We
have woods behind our house but we decided to go hunting on my uncle Butchy’s
property. My dad had bought me a hunting suit and I remember complaining that it
was wet on the inside. You could tell that it was not my daddy’s first time;
he was a natural at getting everything ready seeing as though he has been a
hunter for most of his life. I remember him putting this big bright orange vest
on me.
When everything was ready my dad went to his stand and my mom and I went to find
ours. The weeds were over both our heads which made finding our stand that much
harder to do. When we finally got there my mom and I climbed up to our stand and
I loved the feeling of being up that high. I was still exhausted so a little bit
after we got onto our stand I drifted into a deep sleep. I woke up shortly after
and on my mom and my way back she told me that she had tapped me while I was
sleeping and told me to be careful so I don’t fall off the tree and my reply
to her was, “Do you see this tree? Do you see this tree?” I’m fine!”
Then fell back asleep. When she told me this it was like I was hearing a story
about someone else because I didn’t remember any of it, so we came to the
conclusion that I was sleeping through the whole thing.
When we saw my dad we told him what happened and he thought that it was funny.
On our way out I picked up acorns for my sisters and I. We went to Big Boys and
had a great time except for the fact that we hadn’t brought appropriate cloths
to change into. We thought that it was funny going into a restaurant dressed in
our hunting cloths. We had a great time together and even though we didn’t get
anything that day hunting is more than just harvesting an animal. I hope that I
will one day be as good hunter as my dad.
Thank you for sharing
your story, Cheyenne!
